چکیده

We have used Hubble Space Telescope to obtain moderate resolution 11505700 Å spectroscopy of the nucleus of M33 and a blue star ∼ 1 arcsec NNW of the nucleus in an attempt to find the optical counterpart of the nuclear X-ray source and to characterize stellar populations in the nuclear region. The STIS spectra of the nucleus can be modelled in terms of two starbursts, one with a mass of about 9000 M⊙ at 40 Myrs and the other with a mass of about 76,000 M⊙ at 1 Gyrs. The blue star is a late type O giant, with no obvious spectral anomalies to indicate that it is associated with the luminous X-ray source. The nuclear region is not heavily reddened; 2200 Å absorption features in the spectra of both the nucleus and the star are weak. The data and the star formation history support the hypothesis that the M33 nuclear source, the brightest persistent source in the Local group, is an ∼10 M⊙ black hole binary. STIS Observations of the Nuclear Ionized Gas in the Elliptical Galaxy M84

We present optical long-slit spectroscopy of the nucleus of the nearby radio galaxy M84 (NGC 4374 = 3C 272.1) obtained with STIS aboard HST. Our spectra reveal that the nuclear gas disk seen in WFPC2 imaging by Bower et al. (1997, ApJ, 483, L33) is rotating rapidly. The velocity curve has an S-shape with a peak amplitude of 400 km s−1 at 0. ′′1 = 8 pc from the nucleus. To model the observed gas...

Agn at the Center of the Elliptical Galaxy Ngc 4552 with Hst

The complex phenomenology shown by the UV-bright, variable spike first detected with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at the center of the otherwise normal galaxy NGC 4552 is further investigated with both HST imaging (FOC) and spectroscopy (FOS). HST/FOC images taken in 1991, 1993, and 1996 in the near UV have been analyzed in a homogeneous fashion, showing that the central spike has brightene...

Sauron: Integral-field Spectroscopy of Galaxies

We present the first results from a new and unique integral-field spectrograph, SAURON. Based upon the TIGER concept, SAURON uses a lens array to obtain two-dimensional spectroscopy with complete spatial coverage over a field of 33 ′′ × 41 ′′ in low-resolution mode (0. ′′ 94 lenslets) and of 9 ′′ × 11 ′′ in high-resolution mode (0. ′′ 26 lenslets). The spectra cover the wavelengths from 4800Å t...

We have thoroughly characterized the ultraviolet to near-infrared (0.15 2.2 μm) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the central parsec of the M33 nucleus through new infrared photometry and optical/near-infrared spectroscopy, combined with ultraviolet/optical observations from the literature and the HST archive. The SED shows evidence for a significant level of attenuation, which we model thr...

Statistical properties of ultraluminous IRAS galaxies from an HST imaging survey

We perform photometric measurements on a large HST snapshot imaging survey sample of 97 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We select putative nuclei from bright clumps in all the sample targets, mainly based on a quantitative criterion of I-band luminosity as well as the global and local morphological information. All the sources are then classified into three categories with multiple, d...
